Roe deer and the managed landscape
Browsing by roe deer can affect young trees, woodland regeneration, hedgerows and crops. Signs are not always obvious in isolation, so activity is considered alongside plant damage, tracks, movement routes and the surrounding habitat.
Monitoring and assessment
Trail cameras, thermal observation and repeated field visits may be used to assess numbers, behaviour and patterns of use. This provides a sound basis for deciding whether management is needed and how it should be approached.
Proportionate management
Where deer control is appropriate, it is selective, safe and carried out as part of a wider management plan. The objective is to reduce unacceptable damage while maintaining healthy deer populations and supporting the condition of farmland and woodland.
